Biography:
Born in 1963
Photographer Taiji Matsue’s work offers the viewer glimpses of the earth’s surface from a great variety of locations. Regardless of the setting however, his subjective depiction of the landscape in frontally-lit stark black and white deprives it of existential or endemic meaning. Through this unique style Matsue’s images take on the appearance of collected specimens of the earth, and whether the subject is a vast cityscape or an empty desert, it is regarded as no more than a fragment of the face of the planet on which we live. The detailed black and white patterns recorded in Matsue’s works evoke a daydream-like beauty and intensity, a quality that further enhances this unique and remarkable vision.
